This is the installation tutorial for the new height and throw adjustable PSPEC short throw shifter for the 97-01 Prelude.

Begin by squeezing on the shift-knob and pulling down on the shift-boot collar.

Unscrew the shift-knob.

Remove the carpeted console covers from both sides of the front of the console.

Remove the screws behind both of the carpeted console covers.

Remove the screws on both sides of the center console.

Remove the two screws at the back of the center console on both sides. The third screw (middle) does not need to be removed from either side.

Lift up on the center console and reach under it and unplug the light before lifting the console up and out of the car.

Console removed and shifter exposed.

Use a flathead screw driver to pry out the cable clip.

Once you get the clip out a little, reposition the screw driver and pry it out the rest of the way.

Use a flathead screw driver to push back the plastic retaining tab.

With the retaining tab pushed back, rotate the shifter cable counter-clock-wise to remove it.

Use pliers to remove the cotter pin from the linkage.

Use a 10mm wrench to remove the linkage from the shifter.

Use a 12mm wrench to remove the four shifter frame bolts.

Free the shifter cables from the shifter frame. Bring the shifter frame to a clean work surface.

Use a flathead screw driver to pry up on the retaining tab and turn the pin counter-clock-wise a quarter turn.

Now you can remove the pin.

Use a flathead screw driver to break out the factory shifter retaining clip.

Once the clip is broken out, pry it out with a flathead screw driver.

Remove the factory shifter retaining clip.

Rotate shifter shifter and pull it out of the shifter frame.

Split the shifter ball in half and remove the green plastic shifter retainer from the shifter. You will reuse this part.

Flip the shifter frame over and use a flathead screw driver to remove the factory shifter frame bushings.

Wipe all old grease from the bare shifter frame. Now is a good time to clean the frame if you would like to.

Use the supplied grease to lubricate the PSPEC pivot ball.

Insert the lubricated PSPEC pivot ball into the frame.

Lubricate the end of the cable arm on the PSPEC shifter.

Install the factory cable arm on the PSPEC cable arm. Lubricate and install the pin back into the shifter. Rotate the pin to lock it in place.

Clean and lubricate the green plastic shifter retainer.

Install the shifter retainer over the shifter and into the frame. The retainer is notched on one side to allow movement of the shifter arm. Install the notch over the shifter arm like in the photo.

Retainer installed all the way down.

Install one end of the PSPEC shifter retaining clip down in the shifter frame.

Use a hammer and a flathead screw driver to hammer the other end of the PSPEC shifter retaining clip down into the shifter frame.

Retaining clip installed.

Install the PSPEC bracket and upper shifter rod to the lower half of the shifter. Use the supplied allen key to tighten the special set screws. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SET SCREWS! You will need to adjust the PSPEC shifter to your liking after you install it in the car.

PSPEC shifter installed into the shifter frame.

Bring the shifter frame back into the car and pass the shifter cables back through it. Align the frame over the shifter frame mounting holes.

Insert the PSPEC aluminum shifter bushings with the small end down.

Start all the 12mm bolts by hand and make sure that all the bushings are sitting in the frame properly. Tighten all the 12mm bolts a little at a time to make sure the frame bushings are all seated properly. Then torque them all down. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

Rotate the shifter cable clip and snap the locking tab back in place.

Reinstall the metal cable clip and tap it back in place with a hammer.

Lubricate and reinstall the shifter cable pin.

Install the supplied cotter pin into the cable pin.

Lubricate the PSPEC shoulder screw and slide it back and forth through the shifter cable to lubricate the shifter cable.

Put the shifter cable end in between the PSPEC bracket arms and pass the lubricated shoulder screw through the bracket and the cable. Use the supplied nylock locknut on the PSPEC shoulder screw.

Use the supplied allen key and 7/16" wrench to tighen the locknut.

Check the diagram for adjusting the PSPEC shifter height and throw.

Now it is recommended that you install a shift-knob and take several test drives to find a setting you like. Once you find a setting you are happy with, you can start to work on the shift boot and center console. The knob in the picture is the optional PSPEC shift-knob.

Once you have found a setting that you like. Its time to decide what you want to do with your shift-boot. When using the top two shifter throw settings, you will have to notch the bottom of the shift-boot frame to allow for shifter cable clearance. If you use the third setting down or lower, you will not have to notch the shift-boot frame. If you are going to notch your frame, remove it from the center console by taking out these four screws.

Flip the shift-boot frame over and remove this staple by bending the tabs back straight.

Now pry the staple out from the other side with a flathead screw driver.

Use scissors or a razor to cut away this part of the boot. Check the diagram for how much material has to be removed from the shift-boot frame.

Use a razor, dremel, hand saw, or other cutting tool to cut away the notch in the shift-boot frame.

Here is the shift-boot frame notched. Now you can use the PSPEC shifter on the highest throw setting without the shifter cable rubbing.

Here is another view of the shift-boot frame notched.

Reinstall the shift-boot frame into the center console with the four screws. Flip the shift-boot inside out.

Now it is time to decide what to do with your shift-boot collar. If you are going to use your factory shift-knob and shift-boot collar, you will need to cut down the factory shift-boot collar. Check the diagram to see how much to cut off of the factory shift-boot collar. A dremel tool or hand saw will work good for this.

Here is a cut collar, next to one that has not been cut, to show how much should be cut off. This allows the shift-boot collar to sit lower on the PSPEC shifter. This is needed for the factory shift-knob to screw on when you have the shifter set on a short-height setting. If the shifter is at a tall-height setting, you will not need to cut your factory shift-boot collar.

If you decided to use the supplied PSPEC shift-boot collar, cut off the cable tie from the factory shift-boot collar.

Remove the factory shift-boot collar.

Install the supplied PSPEC shift-boot collar up from the bottom of the shift-boot. Check the image to see how it should be installed.

Use the supplied O-ring to secure the shift-boot collar to the shift boot.

Shift-boot collar installed. This shift-boot collar will probably fit most aftermarket shift boots. The shift-boot collar is machined to fit the PSPEC shifter.

Flip the shift-boot back over and flip the center console back over. You now have the PSPEC shift-boot collar installed. You are ready to install the center console back into the car.

Once you have decided on a PSPEC shifter setting you are happy with, use the supplied LOCTITE to secure the special set screws. Unscrew one screw at a time and apply a small drop of LOCTITE to the screw. Screw it back in and snug the screw down. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN! IF YOU APPLY TO MUTCH TORQUE TO THE SCREW, YOU RISK THE CHANCE OF STRIPPING IT OR DAMAGING THE THREADS. AN OVER TIGHTENED SCREW MAY BE DIFFICULT TO UNSCREW AND MAY DAMAGE THE THREADS IN THE BRACKET. THE LOCTITE WILL HOLD YOUR SCREWS IN PLACE, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!

Make sure you have clearance when shifting 1st to 2nd. Check the image diagram.

Reinstall the center console. Install complete!
